The story about how to break through a sewer in a private house, which I want to tell you, did not arise out of the blue. And not even dry. And not even purely. And it happened on New Year’s Eve 2016, when we country house, where I invited a bunch of guests and relatives, the sewer was clogged.

And in such a way that a little bit of sewage (or maybe a lot, I don’t remember exactly, since I had already started celebrating) overflowed over the edge of the toilet and emitted a smell that was in no way similar to the one that tangerines smell of.

Like a real hero, I am used to meeting difficulties with my chest, and I would hardly have lured a plumber to our light at 8 o’clock in the evening on December 31st. Therefore, I had to tackle everything with my own hands. Of course, I managed to drink a glass of champagne, but here’s what happened before that - read on.

Why do drain pipes get clogged?

First of all, I want to wish you, as a wish for New Year so that you never encounter blockages in the sewer. Because eliminating them is not nearly as fun as it seems. Therefore, I’ll tell you why exactly sewer pipes become clogged.

And this happens in most cases because of our own sloppiness and inattention. In my practice, obstruction of drains in most cases was formed as a result of their clogging with foreign objects that should not be in the sewer. In particular, in my case, the reason for the not-so-New Year's mood was a rag that was flushed down the toilet along with dirty water after washing the floors.

Well, in order not to lead to a flood, I’ll tell you about several signs of a blockage that is forming. If you take timely cleaning measures, dirty water leakage from the toilet and other drains can be avoided.

  1. The water in the bathtub, sink or washbasin drains much more slowly than it used to.
  2. The fluid level in the toilet is higher than it should be.
  3. It starts to come from the drain holes. bad smell(It definitely doesn’t smell like tangerines).

If at least one sign is detected, I would advise starting cleaning. At an early stage of clogging, you can get by folk remedies. If the process is left to chance, you will have to call a special service with powerful compressor equipment.

How to clean drain pipes

Having decided on the need for the procedure itself, you need to choose how to break through the blockage in the sewer. The surest way is to call a plumber who will solve all your problems. But if the time is approaching midnight, and even New Year’s, this proven method will not work for you. For the banal reason that you will not find a sober plumber (and not only plumbers).

Therefore, in secret, I will share with you several ways to remove a blockage in the sewer at home, which I have resorted to at least once:

  1. Folk recipes. The simplest, most accessible and quick way- boiling water. Boil a large amount of water (I often used a 10-liter bucket or pan), then pour it into the drain hole. This helps, but only in case of a small blockage that has not yet been compressed.
    Oddly enough, they will help enhance the effect food products. For example, before pouring boiling water, you can pour crystals of citric acid inside the drain. This active substance will help to eat away fatty deposits and get rid of the plug in the pipe.

Another option is . You need to pour soda into the drain (pour more, don’t be sorry), then pour a glass of ordinary table vinegar into it. These two substances form a violent reaction (maybe you saw how your wife extinguishes soda with vinegar before putting it into the dough), as a result of which the clog dissolves and is washed further into the pipe.

  1. plunger. Another method that often helps if debris has accumulated near the drain. Remember that for the toilet and sink you need to use different devices. They have different diameter rubber bowl. Better yet, buy a special plunger that creates more air pressure and works more efficiently.

The advantages of the above methods are low price and ease of implementation. But from my own experience I can say that the effectiveness will be low. In particular, the rag I mentioned cannot be pulled out this way. Therefore, I cited them for information, and we will talk about more stringent methods below.

  1. Household chemicals. There's not much to say here since you're all watching commercials on TV. “Mr. Muscle”, “Mr. Popper”, “Mole”, “Brawler” and other “living creatures” will come to your aid. But they will come in a figurative sense, and you will have to use them yourself.

When using household chemicals, you should follow the instructions indicated on the packaging, and also protect your respiratory organs, mucous membranes and skin from damage.

  1. Mechanical methods. This is where the heavy artillery comes into play in the form of a vacuum cleaner or a special compressor. With their help, you can get rid of debris plugs located far enough from the drain hole. I used both methods. Moreover, it is not necessary to buy a compressor; the necessary equipment can be rented at a special store.

  1. Plumbing cable. This is exactly the lifesaver that saved me on that memorable New Year. I, as a prudent owner, bought this cable with several different attachments. And it was he who came in handy.

However, I will tell you about my adventure at the end, and now I will tell you, my readers, how to break through a sewer pipe using one of the methods listed in this section.

Thick and thin cables are available for sale (for toilets and sinks, respectively).
I bought both and I advise you to do the same.
One day you will thank me very much for this.

How to clean drain pipes

Boiling water

I have already talked a little about this method. But so that you have all the necessary information, I will dwell on a few more important points that I understood from my own experience:

  1. Before starting work, make sure whether the blockage is local (formed near the drain hole in the pipe section between the drain and the central pipe) or global (that is, the blockage appeared on the main pipe, where several branches lead).

To do this, you need to run water in all sinks and toilets. If an obstruction is found in one, you need to pour boiling water there. If the liquid does not escape throughout the house or apartment, it is better to leave boiling water for later and give preference to another option.

  1. Make sure that the pipes you have installed can withstand very hot water. Some “miracle masters” use plastic pipes designed for liquid temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius. In this case, boiling water may damage engineering system and it’s better not to pour it.

  1. Working with very hot water, use extreme caution. I had a case when one home-grown plumber (not me) spilled hot water on himself. You understand that he didn’t have a holiday after that.

plunger

For this method to be effective, you need to choose the right plunger. It's easy to do. The diameter of the rubber part of this device must be larger than the size of the drain hole. That is, the rubber must completely cover the drain, otherwise it will not be possible to create a vacuum there.

Well, the instructions for using the plunger themselves are incredibly simple. We passed, we know. So I proceeded as follows:

  1. I took out the filter mesh from the drain hole (in theory, it should trap particles of debris, but often does not cope with the task).
  2. I closed the overflow hole in the sink (this is a hole in the upper part that prevents the water accumulated in the sink from rushing over the edge). A regular one will do. rag. The main thing is to do everything so that air does not escape through this hole, otherwise it will not be possible to push through the blockage.

  1. I poured a little water into the sink so that the bottom was covered by 1-1.5 cm. If there is already a lot of dirty water in it, on the contrary, you need to scoop it out. It’s even better if you lubricate the rubber part with Vaseline or fat, which will help create an additional seal. However, I have never had anything like this on hand.
  2. Then I placed the rubber part of the plunger over the drain and pressed it firmly against the surface of the vacuum. The idea is to completely cover the entire hole.
  3. After that, I moved the plunger handle up and down several times. I didn’t count specifically, but you need to do 20-30 similar movements. At the last stage, I pulled the plunger sharply upward to push the debris out.

  1. If necessary, this procedure is repeated several times.
  2. To consolidate the success achieved, I then poured 5 liters of boiling water into the hole.

This is how I dealt with blockages. But, I repeat, it didn’t work that New Year’s Eve. Because you won’t be able to get a rag, especially if it’s stuck deep in the pipe, this way. Tested by experience.

Chemistry

Another method that helped many, but not me. If there is a chemical that will dissolve the rag, it will most likely do it along with the pipe itself, which none of us wants.

However, if the clog is caused by food waste, hair or household waste detergents, chemicals, advertised on TV, will completely cope with the blockage.

The scheme for working with household chemicals is as follows:

  1. Buy the product you like at your nearest supermarket. There is no need to buy something very expensive. From experience I can say that an ordinary “Mole” copes well with the tasks assigned to it.
  2. Study the instructions for using the drug. It is usually printed on the back of the package or label.
  3. Take measures to protect the skin. In particular, I would not recommend pouring or pouring chemicals into drains without rubber gloves. The usual ones, in which your wife washes the dishes and the floors, are enough.
  4. Then all that remains is to wait the time specified in the instructions and rinse the drain with water, getting rid of any remaining drug in the drain.

Vacuum cleaner

This is already a serious technique that effectively cleans pipes. In principle, the operation scheme is similar to cleaning with a plunger, but here a more powerful air flow is created, which works better. And you don’t have to worry, nothing will happen to the vacuum cleaner. You just need to have a device that not only sucks in, but also blows out air (the hose is screwed on the back side).

For these purposes, I used an old “Rocket”, which was inexplicably preserved in the garage. I'll tell you how it all happened:

  1. I bought a new rubber plunger and removed the handle that you pull.
  2. I cut a hole in the middle of the rubber part, which in diameter completely coincides with the diameter of the vacuum cleaner hose.
  3. I connected the cabinet and the rubber “suction cup”. At first I glued it together, but it turned out unreliably. Therefore, then I took several metal clamps and screwed them into the joint.
  4. I screwed the hose to the vacuum cleaner. Remember, exactly in the blow hole. That is, the vacuum cleaner will not suck up debris, but will push the blockage further along the sewer pipe, where the drain pipes become larger in diameter.

Compressor

Almost the same vacuum cleaner, but creates a much stronger air stream, which, as you understand, increases operating efficiency. I used a compressor, so I can tell you how and what to do.

First of all, choose an air blower and hoses. They range from 15 to 40 meters (maybe more, but I haven’t seen them). The length depends on the length of the sewer system in your home.

If the sewer system was designed correctly, inspection holes should be installed every 15 meters for cleaning.
Therefore, for example, it was never useful to me air hose more than 15 meters long.
Unless you want to clean the main pipe of the entire cottage community.

Another important point– nozzle. I took one that blows air back and forth at a certain angle. This way you will not only clear the blockage, but also flush the entire system, avoiding blockages in the foreseeable future.

By the way, I personally used the compressor specifically for flushing sewers. Because even this professional equipment It would hardly help to get rid of the rag in the pipe.

Well, what helped me out, as I already mentioned, was an ordinary plumbing cable, which I’ll tell you about right now.

Cable

I personally consider this tool to be universal. It perfectly breaks through plugs from fatty deposits and pulls out stuck objects from pipes. Moreover, neither the location of the blockage nor any other factors matter. It is enough to choose a suitable nozzle and know how to use the tool.

The plumbing cable itself is a steel, elastic and long spring. A special nozzle is attached to one end, and the other is equipped with a handle that allows you to twist the spring during operation.

Before moving on to describing the cleaning process, I will say a few words to those who have decided to buy such a tool. To choose a quality one, you need to pay attention to several points:

  • inspect the entire length of the cable to identify defects in the metal wire that can lead to a rupture of the cable directly in the pipe;
  • check that the handle is securely fastened to the cable.

Immediately before work, I advise you to lubricate the bushings through which the handle rotates, and also once again check that the tips are securely fastened to the cable. If they break in the pipe, this will only add to the problems.

So, on that not-so-quiet and foul-smelling New Year’s Eve, the process of cleaning the sewer using a plumbing cable looked like this:

  1. I attached the tip and directed the end of the cable into the pipe. Before this, through difficult research, I discovered that a plug had formed in one of the main pipes, 3-4 meters from the inspection neck.

If you work through the sink, lower the cable not into the drain (there is a siphon there), but directly into the pipe.
Before this, of course, you need to temporarily dismantle the unnecessary parts.

  1. After that, I pushed the cable into the pipe until it hit an obstacle. At the same time, I recommend making rotational movements using the handle so that the process of moving through the pipe is easier and the walls of the plastic are not damaged. There is no need to press hard, otherwise you may damage the drain system.
    You only need to rotate the cable clockwise. Otherwise, the coils of the spring may weaken and the cable itself may break.

  1. If there is a blockage inside, you need to continue to rotate the cable near the plug. The nozzle will gradually break down the debris and push it further down the pipe. In my case, these actions did not lead to anything, after which I replaced the nozzle with a hook, hooked this ill-fated rag and took it out. He told me so quickly, but I can’t tell you how much he suffered.

  1. After cleaning with a cable, you need to rinse the pipe with water. Better hot. Even better - with some kind of chemical or citric acid. In the latter case, you will additionally get rid of the unpleasant odor at least a little.

After this, all that remains is to reconnect the plumbing fixtures (sink, for example). The correct functioning of the sewer can be checked by filling the bathtub with water and opening the plug. If a funnel is formed during the drain, you can celebrate the New Year with a clear conscience and pipes.

Conclusion

Cleaning sewer pipes is a brave and noble task, but it is not nearly as pleasant as it might seem. Therefore, it is better to periodically prevent blockages using “Mole” or “Domestos”. And while the reagent poured into the pipes is in effect, you can watch the video in this article.

Blockages in an installed sewer pipe threaten to turn your a private house or an apartment in a shallow lake. Sometimes it is not financially profitable to order a cleaning service, and sometimes there is not enough time for this, because you need to correct the situation instantly. There are many means to clear blockages in the sewer pipe in the form of sand and grease. Let's try to understand the most effective of them.

Causes of blockages and the most dangerous sections of the network

A blockage in a sewer pipe can occur almost anywhere in the bathroom or kitchen, but some areas are at increased risk. These include:

  • Outlet from the sink, which is located in the kitchen. Since quite often substances remaining after washing dishes get into the sewer pipe, and the outlet has a certain shape, which is designed to create blockages from sand, grease and other substances. You can look at the photo.
  • There is a blockage in the siphon of a private house in the bathroom. Various substances, including rust, fall to the bottom of the siphon and over time, because of this, the water level in the sewer pipe rises above normal
  • Toilet releases.
  • Areas where the sewer pipe connects to risers. Photo.

To avoid possible blockages in a sewer pipe in a private home in the future and to better understand how to deal with them, you first need to understand the reasons for their occurrence. They can be roughly divided into two groups. The first includes blockages in the running sewer pipe in the bathroom due to the human factor. This is the entry of food residues and fats into the sink.

If a blockage in an installed sewer pipe in a private country house occurs instantly, then perhaps a large thing has failed: a washcloth, a brush. Often the sewer pipe becomes clogged from a toilet whose opening does not have a retaining mesh. Human causes include errors during system installation. This is the wrong slope or use of cement when installing the toilet.

The second group of causes of blockage are natural, independent of people. Some of them are pictured. These include:

  • rust accumulation;
  • freezing of the sewer system;
  • soil subsidence;
  • mechanical damage to the pipe;
  • wear and tear over time.

Sewage system design

Before cleaning a sewer pipe in a private house or apartment, you should study its system. Usually it consists of an external and internal part. The jam can happen in any of the parts. TO internal system relate:

  • plumbing equipment: toilet, sinks, sinks; Look at the photo.
  • sewer pipe system;
  • risers;
  • bends.

The external system is located outside the territory of the house or apartment. Usually, special services deal with blockage problems in such cases. Although on the territory of a private house you can try to clean it yourself. External sewerage includes (photo):

  • pipe network;
  • places where water settles, various septic tanks;
  • water purification points.

Types of cleaning

Let's figure out how to clean it sewer pipes in the bathroom in the sink. Even with the most careful care, there comes a time when you need to clean the sewer at home in a private home. All known methods can be divided into several groups. You will be able to determine for yourself how to clean sewer pipes in cramped home conditions in your case.

  • Mechanical. In some cases this is the most best ways. They require some skill and physical strength. The tool for this method of clearing blockages in the bathroom in the house is a long cable with a handle on one side to make it convenient to clean or a spiral. One of the ends lowers the sink or toilet by rotating until it hits the blockage. Moving forward and backward will remove the obstacle and clear the path. More details in the photo and video. The simplest mechanical device for clearing clogged sewer pipes when they are clogged is a brush. It is inserted to the maximum possible length and moved back and forth several times. Sometimes this method is enough to clear the plug. There are many ways to clean a sewer pipe in a private home, but this method is one of the best.
  • Chemical. For cleaning pipes in the bathroom, kitchen in the house. More details in the photo. Requires increased attention. Before work, be sure to equip yourself with protective equipment: gloves, sometimes a mask and goggles. Chemicals are divided into alkaline and acidic. It is not advisable to mix them. The principle of operation of both is almost the same. They pour it into the toilet, sink or kitchen sink, add a small amount of water and wait 10-15 minutes, which should be enough to clear the sewer pipe when it is clogged. Afterwards everything is drained with several buckets of water. Sometimes chemical cleaning of clogged sewer pipes does not work well, and then mechanical cleaning is used.
  • Plunger (photo). Sometimes, when the clog in the bathroom is not large, it is enough to use a plunger to unclog it. It is tightly applied to the opening of the kitchen sink, toilet, sinks so that no air passes through. A certain amount of water is poured from above. If it does not seep under the plunger, then make several vertical movements without lifting the device from the sink. Can be seen in the photo. Then they drain the water, maybe with the addition of vinegar, and you managed to clear the sewer pipe when it was clogged in the kitchen.
  • Hydronomic. Modern way clearing clogged plastic sewer pipes in a country private house or apartment. The tools are various machines, mini washes, pumps. Can be seen in the photo. Can clear blockages in pipes 50-300 mm. This equipment can be used to clear clogged pipes not only at home, but also in large industries where the sewer system is clogged.
  • Using a cable. A 3-4 mm steel wire is suitable for this, which can easily clean a sewer pipe. Below is a photo of the cable.
  • Spiral cleaning machine. Before clearing a clogged sewer pipe in the bathroom using this method, you should try others. The equipment at the end is equipped with a spiral. It is inserted into a pipe hole in a kitchen or bathroom in a private house or apartment and moves first in one direction, then in the other, easily making it possible to clean the drain in the kitchen and pick up
  • accumulated clog in the sink. After work, the plastic pipe can be washed with water and vinegar.
  • Cleaning pipes using a spiral. The above-mentioned machine is quite expensive, and it is sometimes expensive to call in professionals if the sewer is clogged. As a way out, use a regular spiral at home to clean a cast iron pipe in the bathroom. It is moved all the way into the blockage, and then back. This should be done several times until complete penetration. Although this cleaning method plastic pipes the spiral in the bathroom is quite complex, today it is considered one of the best to clean the drain in the kitchen. Videos and photos are clear examples of how to deal with clogs in the sink or toilet.

Folk remedies

Ingod, there is no way to clear the sewer if it is clogged, at home with special devices, a cable, a spiral or chemicals to remove a blockage in a cast iron sewer pipe. Often there is simply not enough money for expensive drugs. In this case, you can resort to such an action as cleaning the sewer pipe with the best folk remedies: vinegar and soda.

More complex methods are not always in demand if the sewer is clogged. Many ordinary people have no idea how to clean a sewer pipe in a bathroom at home without using a spiral. So, for example, such a simple way of dealing with a clogged sewer in a private home as throwing a few buckets of boiled water into the sink or toilet can solve the problem and save money.

With this method, you need to wait a while to allow any remaining food or other debris to dissolve. Another best folk remedy is the same boiled water, but already seasoned with some freshly squeezed lemon juice, which allows you to thoroughly clean a clogged sewer pipe. Popular remedies for clearing clogged drains in the kitchen or bathroom include baking soda and vinegar.

Soda and vinegar for cleaning pipes

Many people do not take risks or do not want to use chemicals, a cable, a spiral to clean the pipes in the bathroom in the house if the sewer is clogged, due to the risk of damaging the plastic base or they are afraid of getting these substances on exposed skin. In this case, other substances for clearing clogs at home are suitable. This is an opportunity to clean a sewer pipe with soda and vinegar. See photos and videos for how to use them.

First of all, of course, you should turn off the siphon, clean out the debris that has accumulated there and rinse with hot water. If these best methods do not help, then you can use 200-300 grams baking soda into the sink or toilet and pour a bottle of vinegar into the opening of the sewer pipe.

The reaction of these substances allows you to clean out food debris and rust. The pipe should be immediately closed with a stopper and wait two hours. After they have expired, it is best to clean the sewer pipes in the kitchen or bathroom with plenty of warm water to remove any remaining blockage in the plastic pipe and soda and vinegar.

Chemicals

It is worth mentioning separately the chemical method mentioned above to clear blockages in a private home. It is worth noting that any of the best known preparations for combating debris and rust in sewers are harmless to pipes, both cast iron and plastic.

When using chemicals, special attention should be paid to personal safety, in contrast to the cases when soda and vinegar are used to quickly clear clogged pipes. Gloves, glasses, and sometimes a mask should be a mandatory attribute of a clog fighter. If chemicals accidentally come into contact with the skin, it should be cleaned with plenty of clean warm water.

The most popular and best preparations for clearing clogs in the bathroom are Domestos, Mole, Mister Muscle. These chemicals are poured into a sink or toilet into a plastic sewer pipe in a small amount and allowed to sit there for a while. Then rinse off with warm water, which helps to completely clean the sewer pipes.

Cleaning with a plumbing cable

Let's look at how to clear a plastic sewer pipe in a bathroom in a house if it is clogged using this method. The siphon is removed and a ring is made at the end of the cable for ease of operation. The wire is inserted into the hole using a rotating motion. Look at the photograph of the cable and spiral.

After pulling, the dirt is removed from it. The action is repeated several times until the blockage in the underlying sewer pipe in a country house or apartment disappears completely. After these steps, it is advisable to pour hot water into the system to clear the remaining dirt in the blockage, along with soda and vinegar.

The method of cleaning the sewer with a plumbing cable or spiral is suitable if the cause of the blockage is an object or food debris accumulated in the sewer pipe in the kitchen. To combat fat, a chemical method or folk remedies such as soda and vinegar are better suited.

Cleaning plastic and cast iron pipes

The most common and the best material For sewer pipes running in the house, plastic is currently used. Although cast iron sewer systems are still quite common. They are usually found in old houses. To clear plastic and cast iron pipes from blockages in the bathroom, you need to know a number of features. Let's try to figure them out.

A plastic system is less prone to clogging due to smooth walls. Before cleaning plastic sewer pipes in the bathroom at home using heavy methods (spiral, cable), you should use the best home folk remedies: boiled water, soda and vinegar. If this does not help, then use alkaline chemicals.

Before using them, it is advisable to study the instructions. If the above methods did not help clear the blockage in plastic pipes, then physical action is already used. You should work very carefully with cables and spirals, especially homemade ones, so as not to damage the walls of the plastic pipe.

In old cast iron pipes In addition to the standard causes of blockage, particles from the sewer itself may also be added. It is not recommended to use strong chemicals when cleaning, as they can corrode cast iron and create leaks. First, to clear a clogged sewer pipe in an apartment or private house, you should try using a regular plunger for a toilet or sink.

When it doesn’t help, then use the best folk remedies, such as lemon, vinegar, soda. If nothing can clear cast iron sewer pipes, then a cable or spiral is already used to clear the pipe from blockages. Proceed with extreme caution to avoid damage to cast iron pipes.

Removing grease and sand

The most common substances that accumulate in the sewer pipes of a private home, often forming a blockage, are grease and sand. Can be seen in the photo. For each of them you can use your own best methods the most effective way to clean them.

Grease is best dealt with using alkaline chemicals and home remedies. Before purchasing chemicals, read the instructions. Home remedies include baking soda; to combat fat, it should be used without combining it with vinegar, powder, and soap.

They are placed in the kitchen sink or toilet at night. In the morning, you should clean the plastic pipes with plenty of water to wash away the baking soda and vinegar. The most effective way The fight against grease, of course, is to prevent its formation in the sink or toilet. One way to reduce clogged drain pipes with grease is to install a grease trap in your kitchen sink.

There are several reasons why sand appears in sewers. This is the incorrect installation of plastic pipes, the dumping of construction waste in the bathroom. Sand can also accumulate after taking a shower or washing hands and kitchen items. Such clogged sewer pipes in the house are difficult to clear using chemicals or homemade folk remedies: soda, vinegar. To remove the plug, use a plumbing cable, spiral or other devices. It is often necessary to use the services of professional companies that have the appropriate equipment for cleaning pipes.

Popular media: video

In the presented video you can see the most popular methods of clearing blockages in a sewer pipe in a private house or apartment. After looking through it, you will be able to choose the method that best suits your situation and meets your capabilities.

Sewer system - headache many compatriots, especially those living in houses built a long time ago. From time to time, blockages inevitably occur, caused by a variety of reasons. Most often, the formation of a blockage is largely our fault when an insoluble object gets into the drain system. But the sewage system itself deteriorates from long-term use, the diameter of its pipes narrows, and various substances, pieces of fat and other organic elements settle on the walls.

Today we will try to figure out how to properly remove sewer blockages at home, how to clean the sewer without resorting to the help of plumbers, with your own hands, which means can be most effective: chemical or mechanical.

Something is definitely wrong with the sink drain.

Blockages

For obvious reasons, blockages always happen at the wrong time, and there is no time when they would be appropriate. On any weekday we are busy with work, and on weekends we want to relax and not mess around in our own and other people’s feces. But if a blockage occurs, if the riser does not work and there is water in the bathtub or kitchen sink, you will have to take measures, and first identify the causes of the problems that have arisen.

Conventionally, all blockages that appear in the apartment can be divided into several types:

  • A mechanical blockage is the creation of your own hands when you flush a dense object in the toilet that does not dissolve and does not pass through the pipe, but tightly blocks the riser.
  • The accumulative clog does not appear immediately; it accumulates on the walls of the sewer pipe for a long time. Usually it is based on fats, to which other substances already stick, blocking the flow of water through the pipe. This is the easiest clog to remove and is most effectively washed away with soda and vinegar.
  • The so-called siphon blockage can be the result of a large amount of fat, which at the same time blocks water. Such a blockage is also not particularly dangerous and can be easily removed with chemicals, or the same soda and vinegar.
  • Installation blockage occurs due to the fault of careless plumbers and designers who incorrectly designed or installed the sewer system. Such problems usually occur among residents of private cottages, so it may be impossible to clean the sewer system in a private house without redoing it.

To begin work to eliminate the problem, it is necessary to accurately identify the location of the blockage, for which it is important to check the riser in the kitchen, bathroom, see if the water is draining in the sink in the kitchen, bathroom, etc. In addition to local blockages, it may be clogged main pipe, through which wastewater flows from your apartment into a common collector. This pipe can be cleaned from several places.

Obvious problems with toilet plumbing

Local blockages that occur in the apartment can be cleaned with your own hands, and quite quickly and effectively. But if the main pipe of the entrance sewer system is clogged, then residents of the lower floors can have very serious problems. All wastewater from the upper floors, instead of leaving the house, will flow through the pipes of the lower floors; waste will begin to flow out of the sink drains in the kitchen, bathroom, and toilet.

If such an unpleasant situation arises, you need to immediately call special services and notify the housing office in order to solve the problem as soon as possible and clean the main riser of the house. Delay can have a detrimental effect on your renovation and plumbing in the bathroom, kitchen, and toilet. But let’s not immediately rush to extremes, but move on to consider ways to clear local blockages at home that have occurred in our apartment, which we can overcome with our own hands.

Elimination

There are a sufficient number of options for eliminating blockage problems in an apartment; it is important to know the main ones and use the most effective means to immediately take decisive action.

Chemical methods

To neutralize household blockages, before you use folk remedies, try using a special composition of household chemicals. These products are not that expensive, they are sold in all hardware stores and are supplied with either alkali or acid. The easiest way is to find products known under such brand names as, for example, Tiret, Domestos, Pothan, Mole.

Note that it is best to use such compositions to prevent blockages in the apartment, but if time has been lost and a traffic jam has formed, there is nothing else to do but to flush the riser and pipes with them.

Before purchasing, carefully read the instructions for use of the composition, specify: for which pipes it is used, in what condition it should be poured down the drain, how much liquid will be needed, how long to wait before rinsing it off chemical substances warm water. Some products are not suitable for the kitchen sink because they can damage work area, some substances can also be harmful to bath water, so carefully study where in the apartment to pour the solution into the riser.

A popular remedy for removing blockages in pipes

These compounds are created on the basis of nuclear chemistry, so be sure to wear rubber gloves, or better yet, a respirator, so as not to inhale harmful fumes. Use one acid- or alkali-based solution, but never mix the two as the reaction can destroy your pipes. If there are no such substances in the house, then it is permissible to clean the riser in the apartment using traditional methods.

For example, you can use baking soda and vinegar to remove grease deposits from pipes. To do this, you need to heat a couple of liters of water to boiling water, and pour a pack of regular baking soda into it. This hot mixture is poured into the drain hole, where vinegar is added from time to time. The reaction of vinegar and soda quickly breaks down the remaining grease and breaks up the blockage. Subsequently, the remaining fat is washed off into the general sewer with warm water.

Mechanical methods

If use chemicals did not bring results, and the water in the kitchen or bathroom does not drain, you can use the classic grandfather’s method, pick up a plunger and pump the drain holes. Since ancient times, every home has had this simple device.

Using a plunger in practice

For those who don't know, it looks like a rubber bowl on a wooden or plastic handle. Thicket plunger bigger size than the drain hole, therefore allowing it to be completely blocked. If there is water in the kitchen or bathroom sink, it is advisable to fill it with enough water so that the bowl of the plunger is completely immersed in it.

To break through a clogged drain or pipe using a plunger, you must do the following:

  • immerse the plunger in water and close the drain hole with it, while the handle of the device should take a vertical position;
  • if the work is done in the bathroom, close the guard hole through which excess water usually drains;
  • Having installed the plunger, it is necessary to pump air and liquid in the pipe with sharp movements back and forth, but there is no need to disconnect the bowl from the drain;
  • After making several approaches, you can remove the plunger and look at the situation; if the water drains slowly, you can repeat the procedure.

The principle of operation of a plunger is to create strong pressure inside the pipe, which breaks the blockage or pushes it further into the pipe. sewer. But if a rag or hard object does not pass through the pipe and closes the riser, you can push it through or pull it out with a plumbing cable.

Using a plumbing cable for cleaning

The plumbing cable is completely metal, on one edge there are iron wires that allow you to hook the blockage, on the other side there is a handle that allows you to effectively screw it into the pipe. In order for the cable to pass through all the convolutions of the pipe and reach the blockage, immersing it, it must be twisted evenly. If you are clearing a clog in the sink with a cable, then before using it, remove the siphon and immerse it in the resulting hole.

Rotating around its axis, the cable penetrates deeply into the sewer system and there destroys the blockage, or pushes the object further, to the common riser. If the object cannot be pushed through, you can try to pull it back with the cable. The most important thing is that the cable is long enough to reach the resulting plug.

Hydrodynamic method

If a plumbing cable does not help in removing the blockage with your own hands, you can turn to professionals and ask them hydrodynamic cleaning. Such cleaning procedures are carried out using hydraulic equipment and allow all pipes of the sewer system to be cleaned from the inside.

The operating principle of these machines is quite simple; they create a powerful jet of water under high pressure, which pushes a special iron nozzle out of the nozzle. Moving rapidly along the pipe, the nozzle breaks through all dirt and blockages, and the water washes away any remaining dirt, leaving the pipe clean from the inside.

Hydraulic attachment with nozzle

The hose on which the nozzle is attached is flexible, like a plumbing cable, so it easily moves along all the convolutions of the sewer system. With this mechanism it is very easy to clean the sewer in a private house when there are no obstacles.

Hydrodynamic cleaning produces such high-quality cleaning of pipes from build-up and dirt from the inside that in the near future there will be no need to even take preventive measures, work sewer system it will be like clockwork.

For dacha complexes of residential buildings, this is the most the best way sewer cleaning, so it is recommended to purchase a similar unit for the entire village, and clean your sewers one by one.

Cleaning the sewer will allow you to restore the operation of the system and remove unnecessary liquid from the sink, toilet, or bathroom. At the same time, it is very important to identify the problems that caused the unpleasant incident and try to prevent this from happening in the future.

When water from the bathtub or sink begins to drain very slowly or not at all, the reason is clear - a clogged sewer. Cleaning pipes at home is not a very pleasant task. However, you can’t do without it. With the proper desire and skill, anyone can handle cleaning. We’ll talk about how to clean the sewer pipes in your home in this article.

Causes of blockages

The presence of grates or plugs with filters in sinks or bathtubs does not provide complete protection. There is no guarantee that the pipes in the apartment will not become clogged. Even if you imagine that large dirt or hair can linger on the grill, water with greasy and oily drops from the dishes will penetrate in any case. They are the main culprits of congestion. Over time, they accumulate into plaques that constantly increase. As a result, the sewer pipes in a private house become completely clogged.

Thus, the permeability is constantly decreasing. The first signs of a blockage will be:

  • Slow drainage of water;
  • The appearance of a strong sewer odor;
  • When the water is turned on, its level above the drain grate rises higher than usual.

A sewer pipe at home can be clogged by an object. Wipes or toilet paper. However, such cases are not frequent. The main cause of clogging is organic and inorganic human waste.

Cast iron pipes at home become clogged much more often. The reason is susceptibility to corrosion. Over time, their walls become uneven, which contributes to the accumulation of fatty particles on them.

Plastic pipes clog less often. The main causes of problems are incorrect installation. If the required slope is violated, the likelihood of clogging increases several times.

Remedies

Cleaning sewer pipes should not cause horror and stupor. It is always possible to solve the problem on your own. How to do this is up to you.

Household products

If you need to clear a blockage, you can find a sewer pipe cleaner in a private home at your fingertips. There are several options.

Method No. 1

Clear the drain of any existing debris. Pour 1 liter of boiling water and wait 15 minutes. Take a plunger. Place it over the drain and pump several times. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into it. Pour out the boiling water.

Cleaning sewer pipes using this method can be performed several times. Baking soda is necessary to create an alkaline environment. It helps break down contaminants. She will also disinfect your plumbing fixtures.

Method No. 2

Having understood how to clean a sewer pipe with the second option, you can also easily solve the problem with the next method.

Pour half a glass of soda into the drain. Followed by the same amount of table vinegar. The two ingredients will react chemically. Foam will form. It is advisable to close the cork and leave everything for a couple of hours. After waiting, pour boiling water.

This drain cleaner is quite strong. All deposits must be dissolved.

Method No. 3

Punching sewer pipes in a private house can be done with soda and salt. Do the following.

The components are poured into the drain. Half a glass each. Boiling water is poured there. It is better to close the plug and not drain anything for 8 hours.

Method No. 4

We continue to figure out how to clean the sewer. If you wish, you can use the following method.

You need to take a glass of table salt. The same amount of soda. Quarter of cream of tartar. Mix the ingredients and place in a well-closed container. From time to time you pour the composition into the drain. Pour boiling water on top. After a minute, rinse with cold liquid.

Chemical compositions

In addition to using prepared products yourself, sewer pipes in a private house can be cleaned using ready-made chemical compounds. The choice is extensive. You can take the well-known inexpensive “Mole” or more expensive German gels and powders.

If there is any doubt what better remedy, then know that each will do. The main condition will be correct use in accordance with the instructions. Manufacturers always prescribe the required amount of product and time for cleaning.

Please pay attention! In practice, such means alone are usually not enough. For high-quality punching, you will need to use another plunger.

The method is based on the use of alkaline and acidic elements. Thus, alkalis perfectly dissolve fatty or silt blockages. Acids will be most useful for hair or soap stains.

There is no point in giving examples of specific drugs. Their composition is almost the same. Please follow the instructions and be careful during use. The fact is that many of them form splashes or boil. Among other things, certain products can have a detrimental effect on the enamel of the bathtub.

Chemicals should be used in protective equipment. Be sure to use gloves and goggles. If necessary, use a respirator. Many of them emit fumes that are harmful to the respiratory tract.

It’s clear how to break through. However, they have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include:

  • Ability to remove fairly complex blockages;
  • There is no need to disassemble siphons.

But there are some drawbacks:

  • Cannot be used with a completely clogged drain;
  • Can damage all types of pipes or enamel of plumbing fixtures;
  • Harmful to health.

Using a plunger

Next, let's see how to clean the sewer pipes in your house with a plunger. It has the status of the most effective remedy. It works great for clearing clogs in the toilet, sink or bathtub. It operates on a double principle. Exerts pressure under which the plug begins to move in the pipe. At the same time it destroys it. Sometimes, after destruction, waste comes out of the pipe. As a result, they are easy to remove.

However, for the most effective work, you should learn how to break through a clog with a plunger. The sequence is as follows:

If there is an overflow, turn it off. This is necessary to increase the pressure on the congestion. Place the plunger over the hole. Press down firmly on the rubber working part. The working process should take place at a water level above the gum. Without tearing off the rubber part, perform pumping. After pumping, you should sharply tear the tool away from the drain.

The operations should be repeated. If you correctly understood how to break through and did everything correctly, the blockage will disappear.

Advantages of the method:

  • Removes difficult blockages;
  • Does not require siphon disassembly.

The disadvantage is that it is impossible to remove old dense plugs.

Wire cleaning

If the question of how to clean sewer pipes in a private household remains open, then here is the next method. It will already require a special tool.

Among such tools, the most common are plumbing cable or flexible shaft. They are made from steel wire. At its core, it is a long spring that can bend well. It looks like this. A spiral is fixed at the working end. You can install various attachments on it. Scrapers, hooks, brushes or spirals can be used. On the other is a pen. It makes the whole work process easier.

The work sequence is as follows:

Place the working part of the cable into the sewer. For better cleaning, it is advisable to disassemble the siphon. Rotate the handle in a rotating motion. Push the tool in at the same time. Try to push as far as possible. Together with rotational movements progressive ones need to be done. They will help you navigate turns and bends. But you should not be zealous in pressing.

When you feel a blockage, increase the rotation speed. This will allow it to be pushed through. If there is a hook or coil at the end of the cable, the debris should be caught. It can be pulled out. After the water starts draining, turn on the hot water. You need to rinse with a low flow first. A little later, increase the pressure. Check the total. With a good rate of fluid drainage, everything is done correctly. Otherwise, repeat the manipulations. In addition, you can use one of the chemical agents.

Please pay attention! The cable may get stuck in the sewer pipe. If this happens, then it is necessary to rotate it until the problem area is overcome.

Hydrodynamic cleaning

How to clean sewer pipes at home if the problem is more serious than you thought. In such situations, special equipment will be required. Specialists use hydrodynamic installations and pumps with high pressure. At home, some people use car washes.

Such devices allow you to break through blockages in pipes with a diameter of up to 300 mm. Coping with the most difficult cases.

If we talk about professional installations, they are equipped with various attachments. They are used depending on the type of obstruction and the size of the pipeline.

The punching process is simple. The cleaning machine is installed near the problematic plumbing fixtures. The working part, the flushing head, is sent to the drain. It is she who supplies water under pressure in the pipe. This allows the densest congestions to be washed away and removed to the outside.

Please pay attention! It is difficult to use this method in an apartment. It is accompanied by a flood around the plumbing fixtures being cleaned.

The advantage is the ability to remove the most difficult plugs.

The disadvantages will be the following:

  • Partial disassembly of the system is required;
  • Special installations are used;
  • It is necessary to collect water blown out of the pipeline.

In conclusion, there are many options. We recommend starting with the simplest ones. They will probably deal with the problem successfully. If not, then move on to more complex ones, thanks to which you will surely cope with the jam.

The familiar central water supply system is a very complex structure. Many consumers often have to deal with fluctuations in water pressure.

To do this, you must first study regulatory documentation, according to which any water supply system is designed.

Standard

The organization of any uninterrupted water supply complex should be based on current regulatory documents.

They regulate the main indicators and specifications, which are compulsory, indicating what water pressure should be in the water supply.

The basis is SNiP 2.04.2 – 84, according to which the design of central water supply systems for municipal and economic services is carried out. However, for consumers, what is primarily important is the water pressure in the system.

According to the standards, there are several indicators:

Water pressure. At the maximum water consumption in a building at the entrance to it (before distribution to consumer points), it must be at least 10 m.

This concerns one-story houses. When increasing the number of floors, 4 m must be added to each additional level.

As an example, we can consider a standard 9-story house. For it, the input water column is equal to:

10+(4*9)=46 m, or 4.6 atm.

It is worth noting that this is the magnitude of the input flow. Before sending it to specific consumers, the pressure readings should be reduced to normal.

It should not exceed 6 atm. For hot water supply (DHW), data must be taken from 2.03.01-84. which regulates the organization of internal water supply in residential buildings.

According to the calculated indicators, the DHW pressure should be within the limits:

From 0.3 to 6 atm.

In this case, it is necessary to take into account the nominal indicators for each plumbing fixture, for which the minimum free pressure should not be less than the following figures:

  • washbasin with mixer – 0.2 atm.
  • bathroom and faucet - 0.3 atm.
  • shower cabin - 0.3 atm.
  • cistern toilet - 0.2 atm.

As calculation data, utility services take into account the average daily water consumption. The table presents specific indicators for comfortable housing stock:

Photo: table of daily water consumption indicators, l-person.

It is worth noting that these figures decreased significantly until 2000. They amounted to 600 liters per person. In addition to the documents from which data is taken as calculations, there is another Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated May 23, 2006 N 307.

These data apply not only to central, but also to autonomous water supply to houses. Therefore, when designing such a system, the above indicators should be taken as a basis.

When using a well, its depth is taken into account when calculating pumping equipment. Those. For two-story house, water for which is supplied from a well 30 m deep. Pumping equipment must create a pressure in the system not lower than the following indicator:

10+(4*2)+30= 48 m or 4.8 atm.

If this indicator is above 6 atm. – a pressure compensation (reduction) system should be provided.

In what units is it measured?

Standard water pressure indicators are used physical quantities.

Water column size

This characteristic does not apply to system ones, but is used for many hydraulic calculations. It corresponds to the hydrostatic pressure of a 1 m column of water at normal density values.

For example, if you need pumping equipment with a water column of 20 m, then it must ensure that water rises to the same height.

Bar

Also a non-systemic unit of pressure. Its value is approximately equal to 1 atmosphere or 10 meters of water column.

Technical atmosphere

The initial starting point is taken to be the value atmospheric pressure at the level of the World Ocean. It corresponds to the pressure that occurs when a force of 1 kg is applied to an area of 1 cm².

There is also a Physical Atmosphere indicator, but it is not widespread in the territory Russian Federation.

Pascal

The only system unit that is similar to the technical atmosphere. The difference is only in definition. It is equal to the pressure generated by a force of 1 newton over an area of 1 m².

Each of the above values is applicable to the characteristics of water pressure in the plumbing system. To move them from one to another, you can use the following table:

Photo: water pressure characteristics in the plumbing system

Despite current standards and regulations, utilities do not always comply with the optimal pressure in the water supply. In order to achieve the best indicator, you should use several methods of stabilizing pressure.

How to increase blood pressure

Before you begin to independently design a pressure normalization system, you should definitely contact the Housing Office service.

Its representatives, according to the complaint received, are obliged to carry out measuring work and draw up a corresponding document.

If the minimum water pressure in the water supply system really differs from normal, then the housing office must take measures to stabilize it.

But in practice this scheme practically does not work. What to do in such cases, and is any independent action necessary?

Negative factors:

  • If the pressure is unstable, water hammer may occur. Its consequences are often very harmful - violation of the integrity of the pipeline, failure of plumbing fixtures
  • operation of household appliances that consume water. This applies to washing and dishwashers. For their normal functioning, the pressure in the water supply should not be less than 0.4 atm. Otherwise, malfunctions and breakdowns may occur.
  • level of comfort. With low pressure, it is quite problematic to take a shower or simply wash the dishes.

Let's consider the most common case, when the pressure is significantly lower than normal. To normalize, you can take following methods.

Installation of hydraulic accumulator and centrifugal pump

A hydraulic accumulator is a metal reservoir that is divided into two parts.

Photo: hydraulic accumulator

They are separated from each other by a plastic membrane. One of the chambers is filled with water from the system, and the second serves as a limiter.

When a certain water pressure is reached, the membrane does not allow the system to fill further. To regulate the pressure in the air chamber, the design includes a fitting for injecting (bleeding) air.

The hydraulic accumulator is installed together with centrifugal pump, which produces forced water intake from the system.

To automate control of the operation of this system, the following components are required:

  • pressure switch. Connects to the pump and is triggered when a certain level of water pressure is reached
  • pressure gauge - allows you to visually monitor current indicators.

To install this system, it is necessary to carry out consumption calculations, since if the pressure in the central system drops below 0.2 atm. the pump automatically stops working.

Important! The relatively small capacity of the hydraulic accumulator should also be taken into account. In most cases it does not exceed 100 liters.

As an alternative to this scheme, one can consider a complex method - a pumping station with a storage tank. A pumping station is a hydraulic accumulator and a pump already assembled in one design. In the vast majority of cases, all protective and control equipment is already installed in it.

Photo: pumping station

The pumping station is connected to the central water supply and a pipeline goes from it to the storage tank.

In case of a complete shutdown of water, you can use reserves from the container. Some people prefer to save money and install only a pump, connecting it to a common system.

But this approach is accompanied by the following unpleasant factors:

  • rapid wear of pumping equipment. If the pressure is uneven, the automation will soon fail
  • water will be supplied in jerks, which will lead to water hammer
  • If all the residents of the house install such pumps, then a “struggle” for pressure will begin, which will lead to wear and tear common system water supply

Connection order metal-plastic pipes with radiator, shown here.

How to reduce water pressure

Increased water pressure in the water supply is very dangerous for local pipelines and plumbing equipment. If it remains constant, pipes may burst and the operation of devices may deteriorate.

Several methods can be used to solve this problem. The most effective is to install a pressure reducer at the point of connection to the public water supply.

Photo: pressure reducer

Its operating principle is based on the interaction of two forces - water pressure and springs. The spring presses on the water intake chamber, thereby regulating its pressure. In this case, the spring force compensates for the excess pressure. A typical water reducer circuit is shown below.

Photo: water reducer diagram

Adjustment occurs using a rod. In this case, it is important to maintain normal pressure indicators. To do this, it is recommended to install a pressure gauge, which should be located immediately after the gearbox.

How to find out water pressure

Before you begin designing a pressure normalization system in hot or cold water supply pipes, you need to know the current indicators.

Important! It must be taken into account that the pressure may change over time. This is clearly visible in the morning and evening hours, when water intake is at apartment buildings most active.

To complete this task you will need statistical data, which is best obtained as follows:

  • draw up a measurement schedule. It is best to do this 4 times a day - morning, afternoon, evening and night. Readings must be taken within a week
  • determine the minimum and maximum pressure values
  • compare the results obtained with the standards given above.

According to the data obtained, you can choose the optimal method of regulating the pressure in the water supply.

Photo: water pressure gauge

The device must be installed in close proximity to the connection point to the general central water supply.

In addition to this method, there is also “ folk method" To do this, you need to take a standard plastic liter bottle. Install a tube into the cover that is installed into the flexible shower hose. detailed instructions for this type of pressure measurement is shown in the video.

Formula

There is a certain formula that allows you to calculate the water pressure in the system. Its full part with all the introductions is quite difficult for practical use.

Therefore, it is customary to use a simplified version, which is designed for a standard cross-section of nozzles in a mixer of 0.85 cm.

For the calculation, you need a 3-liter jar, which will be filled with the tap fully open. It is important to note the exact time when it is filled.

The formula looks like this:

Where R– pressure indicator (kg/cm²), t- time filling out the liter jar, sec. The following results were determined empirically:

Pressure regulator

The water pressure regulator for plumbing systems has an almost similar design to a water reducer. The only difference is a more advanced safety system - an emergency valve that opens when the water pressure exceeds the value.

Photo: water pressure regulator for plumbing systems

Important! When this situation occurs, the excess pressure is absorbed by the membrane. If there is a discrepancy in the water pressure parameters in the central water supply system, it is necessary to take measures to normalize them.

Otherwise, with connivance, not only the plumbing equipment, but also the entire internal pipe distribution may suffer.
