Installation of a ridge on a metal tile of a gable roof. Docking skates on a hip roof

The metal tile looks almost identical to the natural ceramic tile.

However, it is made from profiled metal sheet with a protective polymer coating.

This feature greatly reduces the cost of this roofing material, simplifies its installation and maintenance.

In addition, there is a wide range of different accessories available, including roof ridges, making it easy implement even complex projects for the arrangement of the roof.

The metal tile roof ridge is the most top structural element of the roof, mounted along the line of intersection of its slopes. Its purpose is to perform several functions:

  1. Waterproofing the joint of roof slopes. Since some space is inevitably left between the top sheets of metal tiles on converging roof slopes, this place needs to be protected from moisture penetration. The curved shape of the ridge allows you to cover the gap between the slopes, thereby preventing moisture from getting inside.
  2. . When the air temperature changes, condensation may form on the reverse side of the metal tile. This moisture can lead both to corrosion of the metal of the roofing material itself, and to wetting of the one below. In the presence of a ridge, the condensed water gets the opportunity to evaporate and be removed along with the streams of air heated under the metal.
  3. Decor. Roof ridges are available in a variety of shapes and colors, which allows them to be used as decorative elements. In addition, the presence of a ridge gives the roof a finished look.

Structurally, the horse is metal strip, which is given a specific profile. Like metal roofing ridge elements have protective covering from polymeric materials or paint.

They can be painted both in the tone of the slopes, and in shades that contrast with them. Along the edges of the ridge there is a flanging, which simplifies the joint with the sheets of the main roofing.

In addition to the actual ridge bar, the kit includes the following:

  • side plugs to prevent debris from entering under the roof;
  • fastenings;
  • sealing washers to ensure .

On roofs of complex shape, docking elements are additionally used, which make it possible to hermetically join several lines of the upper edges of the roof slopes.

Variety of forms

The shape of the ridge profile does not significantly affect the performance of the roof. Therefore, when choosing the most optimal type, they are more guided by design requirements.

On sale you can find ridge bars of several species:

  • rectangular. Due to the simplicity of the form and the lowest consumption of material, they are distinguished by the lowest cost. Convenient to install on any roof and no need to use end caps;
  • the ridge is semicircular for metal tiles. The main part of such a skate has a semicircular shape, the flanging is flat. After installation from the ends, holes of a significant area remain, which requires the use of plugs;
  • polygonal. They differ from semicircular ones only in a profile made up of three, five or more planes;
  • round metal tile ridge;
  • narrow decorative. Used on hipped roofs where the angle between connecting slopes is minimal;
  • Y and T-shaped. Used at the joints of adjacent roofs.

Types of ridge bars

How to choose a seal under the ridge and how to properly seal

The installation of a sealant between the metal tile and the ridge allows you to reliably seal the joint without the risk of damage to the material. The seal under the ridge of the metal tile is of two types:

  • special ridge seal, the tape of which repeats the shape of the metal tile sheet. It is made of polyurethane foam or polyethylene foam. Has through openings for ventilation;
  • universal seal. It has rectangular section, but due to the elasticity of the material (polyurethane foam) it can be used with metal tiles of any profile. When buying this sealant, it is necessary to check that its height corresponds to the depth of the metal tile relief.

How to choose a sealant for the ridge of a metal tile? When choosing a seal, you should pay attention to the technology of its fastening. Some samples are equipped with a self-adhesive strip, and some require an additional adhesive, purchased separately.

NOTE!

It is unacceptable to use porous materials that are not intended for these purposes as a sealant. They will accumulate moisture and lead to corrosion of the roof.

When sealing the seam, the individual sealant strips are laid end-to-end, without overlapping each other.

How to calculate the height and length of the ridge strip for metal tiles

The height of the plank depends on the angle at which the roof slopes converge. For gable roofs characteristic between the slopes, so the height of the shelves of the ridge bar should be taken no less than 15 cm.

This will provide reliable waterproofing. On hipped roofs, the joint angle is smaller and it is permissible to use ridge strips of a lower height.

The length of the ridge is selected equal to the length of the roof. However, it should be borne in mind that if the length of one plank is short, the joining of adjacent planks is carried out with an overlap of 10 cm.

And now let's talk about how to fix the ridge on the metal tile.

Installation of a ridge on a metal tile

Installation of a ridge on a metal tile is carried out in several stages:

  1. Check straightness the upper sections of the roof slopes. The deviation from a straight line should not exceed 20 mm.
  2. In ridge grooves sealant is glued.
  3. The ridge bar is superimposed on the junction of the slopes flush with one of side cuts.
  4. The symmetry of the imposition of the ridge is checked. Fastening the ridge of the metal tile starts from the center, it must coincide with the central axis of the roof, marked in advance with a stretched cord. It is highly desirable at this stage to have an assistant who controls the position of the skate from the opposite end.
  5. The end of the ridge is screwed to the metal tile with self-tapping screws.
  6. Self-tapping screws are screwed along the entire length of the ridge bar. Fastening points should fall on the upper wave of the metal tile profile. Step - through one or two waves.
  7. Neighboring planks are joined with an overlap of at least 10 cm
  8. If necessary, side plugs are installed.

How to install a skate with your own hands

What other elements of a metal tile exist?

After completing the installation of the ridge, proceed to the installation of the roof: valleys and snow retainers.

The valley is intended for tight joining of connecting roof slopes and its installation is almost no different from the installation of the ridge.

Can be various types, differing both in capabilities and in the method of attachment.

In any case, at the points of their installation under the roof should be equipped with additional stiffening ribs - bars.

Self-installation of the ridge bar will not cause serious difficulties if its dimensions and shape have been correctly selected. In addition, it is highly undesirable to neglect the quality of the sealing tape, the properties of which determine the life of both the ridge itself and the entire roof as a whole.

Do-it-yourself installation of a ridge for a metal tile:

For the installation of a metal-tiled roof, it is not enough to fix sheets of material on the crate. In order for the roof to acquire a finished look and the necessary functional properties (including protective ones), its design is supplemented with various additional elements.

One of them is a roofing ridge for a metal roof, which is an indispensable part of any pitched structure. Without it, the roof will leak, mold will start in the insulation, the rafters will rot. The prospect is bleak. Therefore, you should think about the choice of a ridge and its competent installation at the beginning of creating a metal roof.

The term "roofing ridge" means the upper element of the roof, installed along the edge of the intersection of the slopes.

For a metal-tiled roof, skates are made from a metal strip in the form of an outer corner. Flanging is performed on its edges (the metal is bent into the structure by 1.5 cm on both sides) to prevent moisture from seeping under the ridge. The thickness of the walls of the ridge (metal sheet) is usually 1.5 mm, less common are designs with a metal thickness of up to 2.5 mm.

The main purpose of the ridge part is to bridge the gap between the slopes. This provides protection against atmospheric moisture, debris, and insects from entering the under-roof space. Also, the overlapping of the joint performs a decorative function, that is, it makes the roofing complete and harmonious.

In addition, the ridge bar, installed correctly, becomes the key to high-quality under-roof ventilation. Since, due to the profile of the metal tile, constructive gaps are formed between it and the planes of the ridge, through them it becomes possible for air to escape from the under-roof space.

Varieties of skates for metal tiles

As a rule, firms producing metal tiles also offer accessories for it. Therefore, choose a ready-made ridge bar that matches the color of the purchased roofing material, presents no difficulty.

The main thing that you have to choose in any case is the shape of the ridge bar. There are the following varieties:

  • Triangular models (flat)- the simplest and cheap way arrange the edge of the slopes. In this case, the ridge bar from the end has the shape of a triangle, that is, it repeats the geometry of the angle of connection of the slopes.
  • Rectangular models (also refer to flat ones, their other name is figured ones)- have a more complex, broken shape. Just like triangular parts, they repeat the shape of the angle between the slopes, but at the top they have a U-shaped break.
  • Semi-circular (or round) models- the most decorative and expensive. They are semi-circular in cross section. On the end sides of the ridge, assembled from such strips, plugs are installed that have a semicircular or conical shape (for hip roofs). To connect semicircular ridges on roof slopes of complex shape (for example, hip roofs), T and Y-shaped tee linings are used.

When choosing a ridge element, in addition to the shape, you should pay attention to its width. In installation and further operation, products with a width of 200 mm or more are most preferable. Less than 150 mm are already risky options that require special care during installation, mandatory marking.

Under a narrow ridge, it is easier to “get through” to atmospheric moisture and dust, especially during windy weather. The choice of such a skate is usually due to the small size of the slopes, on which the wider detail looks too massive.

Gap under the ridge: how to close it?

Any ridge plank has a flat sole, with which it is attached to the wave surface of the metal tile. As a result, gaps are formed in the joint. On the one hand, this positive moment, allowing air to circulate in the under-roof space and provide high-quality ventilation.

On the other hand, atmospheric precipitation (rain and snow) can get into the open gaps under the ridge, the accumulation of which leads to decay wooden structures, wetting of the heater.

Therefore, in order to protect the under-roof space from atmospheric moisture, debris and insects, but not to block air exchange (ventilation), either a sealant or a special ridge air element is mounted between the plank and the metal tile. Consider the types and properties of each of these materials.

Types and properties of seals

Seals are produced in the form of tapes with different properties, which are laid along the junction line between the ridge parts and the metal tile. They are of the following types:

  • Profile (hard). They are made of foamed polyethylene, capable of taking the form of roofing sheets. Profile gaskets completely repeat the profile of a particular metal tile. To ensure that the tight overlap of the gaps under the ridge does not cause a violation of ventilation, special openings are provided in the profile seals. Thanks to them, this type of seals is characterized by the best degree of air permeability (in comparison with other options). Their service life is about 15 years.
  • Universal (soft). They have the form of strips of foamed polyurethane foam, which, due to their softness, after installation independently take the necessary shape and fill the existing free space of the gaps. The cellular structure of this type of seals works like a filter: it allows air to pass through (although the degree of passage leaves much to be desired), but retains raindrops, snow and debris. Manufacturers designate the service life of PPU products in the region of 15 years.
  • Self-expanding (PSUL). Initially, they are compressed polyurethane foam tapes impregnated with acrylic. After installation, such seals expand, their thickness increases up to 5 times. The term for full expansion and acquiring the final dimensions is about 2-5 hours. Sealing tapes of this type have one self-adhesive side with a protective strip. During installation, the strip is removed and the tape is glued in place under the ridge. Self-expanding seals are air and watertight. Therefore, in order to maintain sufficient ventilation of the roof during the installation of the seal, gaps of 1-2 cm should be left for every 1.5-2 r.m. The service life of self-expanding seals is about 20 years.

Despite the manufacturers' assurances that the seals allow enough air to pass through for high-quality ventilation, it has been experimentally confirmed that this is not the case. Therefore, with gentle slopes, when it is impossible to do without a seal under the ridge, it is recommended to combine ridge ventilation with the installation of point slope aerators of the “fungus” type.

It is also possible to enhance ventilation, in the presence of seals, by installing special ridge valves on the ridge.

The sales assistant of a hardware store tells about the types of seals and the features of their application:

An alternative to seals is the ridge air element

Instead of seals to bridge the gaps, you can use a special aeroelement - a ventilation tape rolled into rolls. The middle part of the tape is made of polypropylene fabric (or mesh). Side stripes in pleated aluminum with self-adhesive surface.

Unlike gaskets, the ventilation tape does not become a barrier to ventilation due to the high vapor permeability polypropylene layer.

Installation of a ventilation tape does not require special building skills. The roll is unfolded along the ridge line, the protective film is peeled off and the material is pressed tightly against the roof surface. In the presence of a ridge beam, the tape is initially fixed on the beam with nails or a construction stapler. Then - glue the side strips to the metal tile.

Information about the characteristics of the ridge aerator (using the Delta-Eco Roll air element as an example) and the features of its installation on the roof can be found in the video:

After fastening, the ventilation tape is covered with a ridge, which makes it completely invisible. The appearance of the seal is not important for the same reason - the ridge element, after fastening, will hide all its "stuffing". Of course, in the case of competent installation, which is easy to perform even on your own.

The technology of mounting a ridge on a roof made of metal

The installation of the ridge strip is carried out at the last stage of the roof construction, when the last shortened rows of metal tiles are laid along the slopes. Installation of the ridge (build-up of elements) is carried out towards the direction of the prevailing winds.

In most cases, in order to fix the ridge batten, it is necessary to make additions to the batten and mount additional ridge boards above the upper boards of the step batten. The gap between the ridge boards of neighboring slopes should ensure the process of under-roof ventilation, usually it is 70-100 mm (the figure depends on the specific metal tile and the recommendation of its manufacturer).

The thickness of the ridge boards is increased by 10-15 mm compared to the boards of the batten. This is done so that the skate does not turn out to be lowered down in relation to the end bar after fixing.

There is no single answer to the question of how to make a roof ridge from metal tiles. The process of fixing (mounting) the ridge element on the roof is carried out according to the instructions of the manufacturers of a particular metal tile. These recommendations do not always coincide exactly, and usually represent a kind of “average” option, more or less suitable for any type of ridge strip and any metal tile profile.

Usually during the installation process, the following steps are performed. First, the straightness of the ridge axis of the roof is checked (for example, using a stretched cord). The permissible deviation is 2 cm. Large curvature will adversely affect the mounted element, since the walls of the ridge will have to be “adjusted” to the unevenness of the junction of the slopes. Therefore, defects that go beyond tolerance, fix.

Then perform the preparation of the elements of the ridge. The angle of the ridge strip is adjusted to the angle of the connection of the roof slopes. To do this, bend or unbend the bar so that in the free state its mounting shelves correspond to the angle of inclination of the slopes. If the angle of inclination is higher than 45°, the bar will have to be bent too much.

This especially affects semicircular skates, the shape of which changes significantly with such a “refinement”. In this case, the standard end cap will have to be adjusted to the changed shape or a home-made overlay made of flat sheet become.

The installation of the skate starts from one of the ends. The ridge element is mounted on top of the end plate, releasing its edge outward by 20-30 mm. Parts of a flat ridge (triangular, rectangular) are joined, overlapping each other with an overlap of at least 100 mm. Details of a round ridge are joined along the stamping lines. On hipped roofs, Y or T-shaped linings are installed at the junctions of the ridges of neighboring slopes.

In parallel, the seal is laid, fixing it under the ridge. If the seal is self-adhesive, then to fix it, it is enough to remove the protective film from the adhesive layer and press it to the surface of the ridge or metal tile. If there is no adhesive layer on the seal, then the adhesive will have to be applied independently.

When using a ventilation roll (skate air element), the installation changes somewhat. The ventilation tape with self-adhesive side parts is laid and glued to the metal tile first of all, before the installation of the ridge trims.

The elements of the ridge are fixed to the metal tile sheet or to the crate using self-tapping screws, screwing them into the crest of the wave through the wave. It is impossible to violate these recommendations and screw self-tapping screws into the deflection of the wave because of the risk of deformation of the ridge, which will entail the sloppiness of the appearance of the entire roof. During installation, self-tapping screws 4.8 x 35 mm are used - when fixing the ridge to the metal tile, and long self-tapping screws 4.8 x 80 mm - when fastening through the metal tile to the crate.

Fastening the ridge strip directly to the crate is considered a more reliable option. In this case, the separation of the ridge, which is possible in areas with high wind load, is completely excluded. At the same time, most manufacturers of metal tiles in their instructions recommend fastening only to roofing sheets. In any case, the choice of one or another mount is up to you.

Some manufacturers of metal tiles recommend mounting the ridge on a pre-fixed ridge beam. This ensures a more secure installation and an absolutely even location of the ridge bar. A beam is stuffed along the edge of the roof (sometimes it is installed on special metal fasteners), 40-50 mm wide. Ridge elements are put on it and screwed to the metal tile.

After fastening all the elements, check the evenness of the assembled skate. In the absence of deviations, the work is considered completed.

Useful video on the topic

The skate is not an element that should be underestimated. His correct installation guarantees:

  • decorative appearance of a metal roof;
  • dry under-roof space;
  • lack of condensate;
  • sufficient ventilation;
  • protection against leaks through the ridge.

Therefore, the installation of the ridge should be carried out in compliance with the technology described above, without the slightest disregard for trifles. If you are not confident in your abilities, it is advisable to seek help in installing the ridge from qualified roofers.

The ridge for a metal tile is an integral element of a metal roof. It reliably protects the attic space and the truss system from external influences (rain, snow and various debris), and also performs a ventilation function. Mounting the ridge is not particularly difficult, so the upcoming work can be done by hand, saving a certain amount on calling the construction team. The main thing is to study some of the intricacies of installing a metal roof ridge and follow all the instructions and recommendations.

Varieties of skates for a roof made of metal

The ridge strip performs not only a protective function, but is also an important element of decor, that is, the aesthetic appearance of the roof depends on the correct installation of it. Skates are made in various colors and textures, so you can easily pick up the best option for a particular case. And in order for the future design to look harmonious, it is recommended to buy such strips in the same store where the metal tile was purchased.

Today on the market building materials you can find these types of skates for metal tiles (Fig. 1):

Figure 1. Types of ridge battens for the roof.

  1. Semicircular. Often used to protect docking points on gable and four-slope roofs. To prevent moisture and debris from entering the under-roof space, their ends are equipped with special plugs.
  2. Rectangular. They can be installed on any type of roof. They have a lower cost than the first type, and do not need to install plugs.
  3. Narrow decorative. They have a narrow profile, so their main function is not protection, but decoration. Decorative strips have found their application in the arrangement of hipped roofs, spiers and arbors.
  4. T- and Y-shaped. Are applied to connection among themselves rectangular skates.

When buying skates for a roof made of metal, you need to pay attention to their width, which must be at least 15 cm. Otherwise, when strong wind moisture and debris will get under them. When choosing skates, it is recommended to give preference to products with edging. In this case, they will have increased rigidity and strength.

When buying a ridge for a metal tile, its dimensions are calculated using a special formula: H = 0.5xBxk, where H is the height of the ridge, B is the width of the building to be covered, k is the roof slope coefficient. The slope coefficient is presented in the table (Fig. 2).

The design of skates for metal tiles

The main structural elements of skates for metal roofing are:

Figure 2. Slope factor.

  • ventilation bar;
  • ventilation tape;
  • sealant;
  • fasteners.

Such a device of a roof ridge made of metal tiles allows you to securely fix the product to metal sheets and ensure its high functionality. One of the most important elements of the roof drainage system is the sealant. It is he who protects the rafter system and the attic space from precipitation and various debris. The seal is mounted between the ridge strip and metal sheets (Fig. 3).

There are several types of seals:

  1. profile. Made from polyethylene foam. This material is characterized by excellent moisture protection and air permeability, due to which the roof of the metal tile retains natural ventilation air. Another advantage of polyethylene is the ability to take the form of roofing sheets, thereby providing excellent waterproofing.
  2. Universal. Made from polyurethane film. Reliably protects inner space from dust and moisture.
  3. Self-expanding. Made from acrylic impregnated polyurethane foam. It is attached to the base with a self-adhesive film.

Do-it-yourself installation of a roof ridge from a metal tile

Before installing the ridge on the metal tile, it is necessary to prepare the following tools and materials:

Figure 3. Mounting the seal.

  • screwdriver;
  • metal scissors;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • ladder;
  • safety cord;
  • fasteners.

Installation of the metal roof ridge is the final stage of roofing, that is, it is performed after the entire roof is covered with metal sheets.

The first step is to make sure that the roof slopes intersect in a straight line. The maximum allowable deviation is 2 cm. Large irregularities will adversely affect the appearance of the skate and its service life.

Fulfill installation work better with two assistants, since you will often have to move along the upper cut of the roof, and this is quite difficult, so your hands should be free.

Sitting on the ladder, ask the assistants to give you two opposite corners, then install the ridge on the edge of the roof so that it coincides with the extreme sheets.

Control the evenness of the paving with building level and your assistants. If everything is installed correctly, use a screwdriver to screw the outer part of the ridge to the roofing sheets. The following items are installed in the same way. After the outer elements of the skate are installed, fasten the inner parts.

Fasteners (self-tapping screws) should be screwed in with such a step that the skate does not make popping sounds even in strong winds.

The screws are screwed into the crest of the "wave" of the profiled sheet. In this case, it is recommended to install sealing gaskets, which not only increase the adhesion of the connecting elements, but also take on all temperature deformations. Having completed the fastening of the last element, it is necessary to make sure that the ridge is even. If no deviations are visible, the work can be considered completed.

Having figured out how to fix the ridge to the metal tile, you can safely proceed with the installation. At the same time, do not forget that high-altitude work is characterized by injuries, so do not neglect safety precautions using a safety cord, ladder and other devices.

Over the years of using metal roofs, it has established itself as a durable, reliable and affordable roofing material. It is more often used for gable roofs, since sheets of thin and light metal with an extruded relief are great for do-it-yourself installation. The only weak point of such a roof is the angle between the slopes, unprotected from moisture and blown. In order to quickly and aesthetically eliminate this defect, the installation of a type-setting metal ridge is required.

Ridge profile for metal tiles

The junction between two roof slopes is called a ridge joint. No matter how ideally the installation of the roofing material is performed, small gaps and gaps remain between the sheets. Not only does it look unaesthetic, an unsealed ridge causes the following problems in the operation of a metal roof:

  • Penetration of moisture into the gaps between the sheets of metal. Water seeps into any, even minor gaps, penetrating under the roofing material and destroying wooden elements. truss system.
  • Blowing cold air under the roof. An unsealed ridge is an abyss into which heated air escapes from a heated house, this is a gap not only in the roof, but also in the budget, because more fuel and energy will be required to maintain the optimum temperature.
  • Ventilation problems. Mounting a stacked ridge on a metal tile will help establish effective ventilation of an attic or attic space. The air there will be fresh, without drafts.
  • Noise. The air, getting under the sheets of metal tiles through the ridge, circulates and is divided into streams, due to which the roofing material is deformed and makes popping sounds.

Scheme of the correct assembly of the ridge profile for metal tiles

The installation of the ridge makes the appearance of the metal tile roof harmonious and complete, it will preserve the healthy state of the timber of the truss system, increasing its service life.

Assortment of skates

If before you had to think about how to equip outer corner between the slopes of the roof, now it is enough to come to the hardware store and pick up a finished ridge in the color of the metal tile of the shape you like. Manufacturers offer the following options:

Assortment of additional elements for a roof made of metal

  1. semicircular patterns. A metal that is molded into a semi-circular shape. From the end sides, it is necessary to attach plugs to a type-setting ridge of this shape in order to close the voids into which snow, water or wind can get. The most expensive of the entire range of skates.
  2. direct models. Made in the shape of a rectangle, it is used for hip, gable, three-slope types of roofs for the design of the ridge. Fastening a rectangular profile will cost less than a semicircular one, but such a connection will look plain.
  3. triangular patterns. They completely repeat the geometry of the angle between the slopes, so their installation does not involve the use of plugs. The cheapest way to finish roofing work on a metal roof.
  4. decorative patterns. They differ from other types of skate in their purpose. Fastening decorative elements with narrow shelves does not solve the problems with waterproofing the gap between the joints, but simply gives a neat look.

Mounting diagram for a semicircular and straight ridge

When choosing a metal ridge connection, you need to pay attention to the width of the shelves and the presence of a rim. Models without rims do not have enough rigidity to remain flat when fastened with self-tapping screws. And narrow shelves, the width of which is less than 150-200 mm, are not able to effectively protect against the penetration of water and snow.

Seal selection

Professional roofers advise to inspect the condition of the ridge groove before starting work. If the installation of the metal tile was carried out correctly, then it should not have gaps thicker than 20 mm. Otherwise, a sealant must be used. The following types are suitable for this:

Even if the joint between the slopes seems to be even, its isolation with a sealant before starting to fasten the ridge will never be superfluous, because the service life of the roof and the safety of the roof depend on the tightness of the joints. interior decoration attic.

Installation sequence

In order for the skate to perform the functions assigned to it, it is necessary to follow the recommended installation technology. High-altitude work difficult to complete alone, so it is better to get a couple of helpers. Installation must be carried out in the correct order:

Installation of stairs from boards for mounting the ridge

The layout of the screws when working with metal tiles

When working with a metal tile, it is necessary to screw in the screws on the crest of its wave, use a rubber seal to isolate the holes from moisture or special self-tapping screws, the rubber head of which performs the same protective functions. When mounting, do not screw in the screws too often or infrequently, find golden mean so that the metal tile does not “excite” from an excess of fasteners and does not “clap” in windy weather with a shortage.

Mounting metal additional elements on the ridge will protect the roof from moisture ingress, save heat, however, during installation, do not forget about safety when working at height.

Therefore, defects that go beyond the tolerance are corrected.

In this case, the standard end cap will have to be adjusted to a modified shape or a home-made lining made from a flat sheet of steel should be mounted.

The process of installing a ridge on a metal roof with overlapping of the ridge gaps with the help of a sealant was filmed on video:

The skate is not an element that should be underestimated. Its correct installation guarantees:

  • decorative appearance of a metal roof;
  • dry under-roof space;
  • lack of condensate;
  • sufficient ventilation;
  • protection against leaks through the ridge.

Therefore, the installation of the ridge should be carried out in compliance with the technology described above, without the slightest disregard for trifles. If you are not confident in your abilities, it is advisable to seek help in installing the ridge from qualified roofers.

A responsible and important stage in the construction of a durable and reliable hip roof structure for the roofer is to properly mount the hip roof ridge. Without this seemingly simple element, it is impossible to perform such important functions of the roof as: preventing precipitation from entering the premises under the roof, decorating the roof and ventilating the under-roof space for drying the roof cake.

What is a hip roof ridge?

Hip roof ridge, like pitched roofs other types, formed by convergence on one line of pitched surfaces. Depending on the type of rafter system, the ridge can be a bar laid on vertically installed racks or fixed on the tops of the housing construction gables. The upper parts of the legs of the rafters rest on the ridge bar (run).

In the latter case, the legs of the two rafters are connected to each other - triangle trusses are obtained, placed in one row, connected to each other by jumpers. From 2 sides at the highest point (on each pitched plane) - at an angle - boards are attached to one another. They are placed parallel to the cornice line and form a roofing ridge. The essence of this name is the actual closing of the gap formed at the very top of the roof after installation on the pitched planes of the roof covering. To form the ridge, figured special elements made of galvanized or building material covering the roof can be used. Another used name for a skate is a ridge bar.

Important: the form of release and manufacture of this special element is varied: ribbed, conical, angular, semicircular.

Functional features

The construction of a roof ridge has its own nuances. This structural element is not only a decoration and aesthetic addition to the appearance of the roof, it plays a very important role in ensuring the correct operation of the entire roofing pie.

Today's roof is a complex multilayer system, including layers of waterproofing, insulation, vapor barrier. The roofing pie also includes ventilation gaps. The “cushion” of air formed between the thermal insulation layer and the roof covering forms another auxiliary barrier. It is located between the insulation layer and the atmosphere, and provides alignment temperature regime, which changes as a result of heat loss from the housing construction rooms in winter and excess heat when the roof is heated in the hot season.

Therefore, in winter, the roof does not warm up, preventing the thawing of snow masses and the formation of ice on the roof, and in summer there is no overheating of the attic, attic and other housing construction rooms.

It is important not only to form a ventilation gap, but also to ensure the efficient and continuous circulation of air masses in it. For this, the filing of the overhangs of the cornice is made with perforated soffit, boards mounted with slotted gaps, and other building materials with the installation of ventilation grilles. On the roof, the hip roof ridge is fixed so that air flows freely into the ventilation gap roofing cake. The circulation of air flows will allow excess liquid to be released into the atmosphere from under the roof, preventing it from accumulating in the insulation layer and the wooden details of the truss frame.

Important: sufficient circulation of air masses in the under-roof space eliminates moisture and decay of rafters and other roofing parts.

Calculation of the installation height of the ridge

The height of the roof ridge is determined during the creation project documentation for the construction of the rafter system, this is especially necessary if it is planned to erect a hip roof or other complex types of roofs (for example, with asymmetrical slope planes).

The installation height of the ridge directly depends on the angle of inclination of the roof slopes, which, in turn, is determined taking into account such factors:

  1. Data on the existing atmospheric loads at the construction site.
  2. The type of roof covering used.
  3. Architectural solutions and aesthetic appearance of the building.
  4. Complexity of installation and financial feasibility of construction.

The roof of housing construction must correspond to the proportions of the building box. It will take more building materials to install a high roof, and a flat roof will need to withstand heavy loads of snow masses.

For difficult cases, a special program is needed to determine the installation height of the ridge. For simple buildings, it is enough to take into account the recommended values of the angle of inclination of pitched planes, which are 35 - 60 °. The height of the ridge placement is determined using a simple calculation: in a triangle with a right angle, the length of one of the legs is equal to the length of the other leg, which is multiplied by the tangent of the angle value at the base. For calculations, the base of such a triangle is taken ½ of the length of the housing construction wall.

Features of mounting the ridge

The ridge roof purlin can be made of steel material or wood.

Steel parts naturally weigh a lot, so they are rarely used in individual housing construction. The ridge for a hip roof is made mainly of wood. The beam before laying is necessarily impregnated with bio-flame retardant compositions, which significantly extend its service life.

Also, the skate is protected from negative influence external environment by waterproofing joints, installation of ventilation gaps. Protection of the ridge beam from the outside is provided with the help of special roofing parts sold for each type of roofing, or made by hand from other roofing building materials, or from galvanized steel sheet.

To simplify the installation of the details of the external protection of the roof ridge, a wider (or solid) crate should be laid at the top of the pitched surfaces. From the top line of the pitched plane to the edge of the roofing, the distance should be up to 7 centimeters. If this gap is greater than 7 cm, it is protected from the outside by ridge structures with expanded side blades.

It is possible to prevent the accumulation of liquid under the roofing ridge by creating heat and waterproofing.

It is important to equip ventilation cavities - in their absence, liquid and steam will be collected even when a sealed structure is installed.

Skate fasteners

The method of fastening the roofing ridge depends on the type of building material from which the protective strip of the ridge is made. Manufacturers of roofing building materials often offer customers their curly ridge parts made from the same building material as the roofing.

The main features of the installation are that you must first install the extreme details of the ridge trim (on all gables), and stretch the cord between them. Focusing on it, the rest of the ridge parts are installed strictly horizontally. It is important to install them so that the joints are tightly closed, air does not get into them and water does not flow.

Sealing the hip roof ridge can be done using:

  • sealant;
  • mounting construction foam;
  • Portland cement solution (for wave slate);
  • special equipment from roofing manufacturers.

For a wave roof asbestos-cement slate on sale there are asbestos-cement protective external elements. They are placed on the slopes simultaneously on both sides of the ridge run with an overlap on the upper parts of the slope planes and are fixed with slate nails.

Steel ridge elements are purchased at construction stores or made from galvanized sheet. Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws with neoprene or rubber seals.

Tiled roofing requires the use of special ridge ceramic elements for the arrangement of the skate. When arranging a roof with the laying of flexible tiles or flexible roll building materials, the ridge is made directly from the roofing material.

Important: when placing the hip roof ridge, you need to remember that you may need to install decorative special elements that will become an additional decoration of the roof.
