In some collections, inserts and panels are offered complete with ordinary ceramic tiles, which harmonize with it as much as possible. In this case, you do not need to search for a companion tile, it is enough to familiarize yourself with the manufacturer's offers in its catalogs.

Basic recommendations for choosing ready-made decorative panels on tiles

Most buyers, when choosing a tile and a decorative panel suitable for it, already imagine the required plot or image. However, if you discard your stereotypes and turn on the imagination in terms of combinatoriality of several varieties of tiles, you can achieve a stunning effect. To facilitate the choice, just look at the catalogs and ready-made photo examples in order to use the most successful ideas for yourself.

panels, inserts and other decorative elements for wall decoration should be slightly brighter than the main background and match the gamut (warm or cold part of the spectrum);
enlarged objects or photos should occupy an entire wall;
large-scale paintings or panoramas require a large surface and a free wall (without furniture);
if mirrors and other inserts are intended, they must be justified from the point of view of the overall design;

a bright image should be balanced by a calm background;
contrasting patterns should be in harmony with the rest of the interior;
for vague paintings, it is unacceptable to use bright frames so as not to distract attention from the main panel;
the picture or landscape should not be interrupted or covered by sanitary ware or accessories (only a small fragment if absolutely necessary);
furniture is not placed near the panel, but the picture looks very impressive on top of the tank or on a separate wall;
it is not recommended to combine floor and wall panels in one room, except when they form a single picture (seabed, panorama of the seashore).

It is designed to dilute the monotony of the surface with some kind of image in kitchen apron. This is the surface behind the stove and sink to the wall cabinets, that is, above the countertop of the cabinets. For the kitchen, small inserts with a fantasy ornament or an image of fruits and vegetables are suitable. In the bathroom, it is better to take a ready-made insert with a pattern that matches the overall design. Functional inserts are also available, that is, a tile with a soap dish, a towel hook or a small hanger for bathrobes and linen.

2. A picturesque panel usually occupies the entire surface - a wall, ceiling or floor. It is very exciting to look at whole paintings on the ceiling or wall while taking a bath. It can be a real painting by a famous artist, transferred to a tile or made in the form of a three-dimensional bas-relief. The panel can be solid, assembled from individual tiles or mosaic, that is, lined with colored fragments on any smooth surface.

3. Freesize panels - a kind of decorative panels without size restrictions. The name is translated as “free size”, since the center fragment can be laid out further and supplemented with another tile to any height. Often this is just a drawing without clearly defined boundaries, for example, in the form of additions to a bouquet or an abstraction. Sometimes there is a pattern in only one corner of the tile, and part of the tile is plain, which makes it possible to vary the pattern arbitrarily.

4. A panel of tiles on the floor is applied only to the most durable and wear-resistant materials, such as porcelain stoneware. The pattern for the floor is different from the wall panels, and such plots suggest a view from above, that is, from the eye level of an adult. Such tiles can be laid on a perfectly flat floor surface. These tiled panels compete with decorative self-leveling floors.

5. Border - an oblong tile with an ornament for building linear images with a repeating pattern, which have been known since Antiquity. It is smooth and embossed, wide and narrow, two-tone and variegated. Using border tiles, you can frame decorative panels or build an independent pattern on a plain background of different types tiles. A popular border styling is a horizontal stripe separating a darker top from a lighter bottom. Often, a border frames a decorative image or combines mating surfaces. A vertical border is used for zoning or delimiting decorative elements, as well as for framing a bathroom mirror.

Embossed tile panels compete in beauty with ordinary smooth panels. They come with a 3D effect and at the same time are almost flat, but so realistic that you involuntarily want to feel the surface behind the image, this is an illusion. But there are also rather convex reliefs, similar to stucco, which form whole plots.

Tip: Do not try to purchase all these varieties of tiles, just choose 1-2 varieties to dilute the uniform surface of the cladding with a decorative addition.

How to lay out a decorative panel?

Before laying a panel of ceramic tiles, it is important to read the instructions. It should indicate how the panel should be attached to the wall. There is a seamless method of laying ceramic tiles and are common. In both cases, the use of grout or sealant is assumed, but this is done in different ways. For seamless laying, the gap between the tiles is minimal, and the tile itself must have an absolutely even cut and exactly match the dimensions of each fragment.

For any type of panel laying, surface preparation (walls, ceilings, floors) is required. It is important to remove all remnants of the previous layer - paint, wallpaper, peeling plaster. A primer is applied to a flat surface for better adhesion, which must dry completely before laying the panel.

While the surface dries, be sure to lay the finished panel on any smooth surface in the order of the fragments in which they will be applied, for example, on the wall. If a border and other additions are intended, they are also best laid out around or in the way they should look finished. Laying tiles always starts from the bottom row, while it is important to check the horizontal and vertical lines so that there are no distortions.

Sometimes you have to use a tile cutter if there is an excess of tiles in height and width. Small fragments of a decorative tile panel can be fixed with liquid nails, and large fragments can be fixed with a special construction adhesive, which must be indicated in the tile laying instructions. Only after 1-2 lower rows have dried, the next rows of panels are laid above, until complete.
