Naphthalan ointment (Unguentum Naphthalani) is a medicinal product based on naphthalan oil. The product has a disinfecting, softening and calming effect, and has analgesic properties.

History of the appearance and medicinal properties of the drug

The resort town of Naftalan is located 320 kilometers from Baku, where the medicinal properties of the substance of the same name were discovered more than 100 years ago. The world's only naphthalan oil deposit is located here.

Its active production began in 1875, after which it turned out that Naftalan oil is not flammable, but has medicinal properties. More than 1,600 scientific studies have been devoted to naftalan oil, which have proven its effectiveness in the treatment of skin, gynecological and neurological diseases.

Naftalan ointment has a beneficial effect on the entire body as a whole, stimulates its functions, increases protective properties and destroys pathogens. This medicine is of natural origin. The basis of the drug is paraffin-free naftalan oil, which does not contain gasoline, naphtha or kerosene.

Hydrocarbons in the ointment have the following medicinal properties:

  • analgesic effect;
  • relief from itching, activation of the restoration of affected skin cells;
  • vasodilating properties;
  • anti-inflammatory effect;
  • stimulation of ovulation processes, spermatogenesis;
  • activation of metabolic processes.

These characteristics make it possible to widely use the drug in the following areas:

  • dermatology (the drug treats urticaria, lichen, boils, helps with allergic dermatitis and pustular diseases);
  • gynecology (recommended for infertility caused by andexitis and underdevelopment of the uterus, inflammation, adhesive disease);
  • surgery (helps to get rid of phlebitis, epidymitis and thrombophlebitis, prescribed for arthrosis, arthritis, myalgia);
  • neurology (successfully used in the treatment of neuritis, plexitis, neuralgia);
  • urology (fights prostatitis, hemorrhoids).

The medicine is a thick, homogeneous, dark-colored ointment with a specific odor. The main components are hydrocarbons containing useful biologically active substances. 100 grams of ointment contains: refined natural naphthalan - 70 g, paraffin - 18 g, petrolatum - 12 g. There are no hormones in naftalan ointment.

Indications, methods of use and dosage

The drug treats diseases of the skin, peripheral nervous system, and has a beneficial effect on muscles and joints.

Due to its versatility and multifunctionality, naphthalan ointment is widely used for many health problems, as well as for cosmetic purposes.

  • dermatological diseases: eczema, seborrhea, dermatitis of various etiologies, psoriasis, neurodermatitis, ichthyosis;
  • lesions of the peripheral nervous system: sciatica, radiculitis, neuralgia, neuritis;
  • diseases of the spine, osteochondrosis with radicular syndrome;
  • joint diseases: arthrosis and arthritis;
  • lesions of soft tissues and the musculoskeletal system;
  • peripheral vascular diseases;
  • haemorrhoids;
  • burns, frostbite, purulent wounds;
  • bedsores;
  • sports injuries and their consequences.

This medicine is used to lubricate affected areas of the skin, for taking local baths, using tampons and applications. For maximum effect, these manipulations are recommended to be combined with physiotherapeutic procedures. For rapid absorption of the ointment, Sollux lamps are used.

For cervical or lumbar osteochondrosis, daily lubrication of the affected root area is performed. To obtain better results, the treated area is heated with a special light lamp, and the procedure is also combined with ultraviolet and ultrasound irradiation, and treatment with electromagnetic waves in the decimeter range. The optimal duration of the procedure is half an hour. To obtain a sustainable therapeutic effect, 10-12 sessions are performed.

To treat inflammation of the periarticular soft tissues of the shoulder joint, naphthalan ointment is applied to the area of the cervical spine and shoulder girdle, after which the treated area must be wrapped. The procedure is carried out using DMV therapy. The effect is carried out within 20 minutes, in a course of 15 procedures.

In case of injuries to peripheral nerves, the affected area (innervation area) is lubricated with ointment and wrapped. Lubrication is carried out daily, the duration of the procedure is 20 minutes. The treatment course consists of 15 sessions.

Dermatological diseases are treated by daily lubricating the affected areas of the skin. The duration of the procedure should be 15-20 minutes, the course duration should be 20 days.

To combat burns and difficult-to-heal skin defects, the affected area is lubricated with ointment. After this, the skin is heated with a lamp for 20 minutes (the area is left open). The skin is first treated with alcohol, cleansed of dead areas, and blisters are pierced. You need to repeat the procedure daily, 2-3 times for 20 minutes. The duration of treatment is 2-3 weeks, until a new layer of epithelium appears.

For external hemorrhoids, the painful area of skin is treated with ointment 2 times a day (the skin must first be washed and dried). To treat internal hemorrhoids, you must use a special applicator that comes with the ointment. The nozzle is put on the tube and inserted into the rectum. By gently pressing on the bottom of the tube, the medicine is introduced into the body, after which the applicator must be carefully removed. The course of treatment is 2 weeks.

For vascular diseases (osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, thrombophlebitis) and venous insufficiency, the skin over the affected joints is lubricated and the limbs are treated. Then the skin is heated with a special lamp or wrapped. The optimal procedure time is 30 minutes. Repeat for 10-15 days.

Naftalan oil is a thick black liquid with a specific odor. Its field is located 320 km from Baku, on the territory of Azerbaijan. For more than 100 years, oil has been used to combat skin problems. Nowadays, naphthalan ointment and other products effective for the treatment of psoriasis have been created on its basis.

Composition and beneficial properties

Naftalan oil is a substance with a complex structure. Its active component is naphthenic saturated hydrocarbons, which have high biological activity. Their concentration in the product is up to 70%.

Naftalan also contains:

  • aromatic hydrocarbons - 15%;
  • naphthenic acids - 1%;
  • trace elements: iodine, bromine, zinc, cobalt and lithium;
  • mineral oils;
  • active resins;
  • hydrogen sulfide compounds.

Naphthalan owes its healing properties to naphthenic hydrocarbons. Their mechanism of action is similar to hormonal, but they have nothing in common with glucocorticosteroids. Thanks to this, the product is not addictive and practically does not cause unwanted effects.

Beneficial properties of naphthalan oil:

  • fights inflammation;
  • eliminates pain;
  • destroys pathogenic microflora;
  • strengthens local immunity;
  • protects skin from ultraviolet radiation;
  • stimulates metabolism;
  • accelerates the restoration of damaged areas of the epithelium.

Experts note that the listed healing capabilities of naphthalan are successfully complemented by its reflex effect on the human central nervous system. The active components of the product have a positive effect on the regeneration of damaged nerve fibers in the skin, increasing their total number.

The product is easily applied to the affected areas and is quickly absorbed. Doctors recommend treating psoriatic rashes with naphthalan locally and additionally using applications to the joints and spine, which allows you to achieve the expected result in 10-15 treatment procedures. Remission after therapy can last from 6 months to several years.

The cost of the ointment, its possible analogues

The chemical composition of boron-naphthalan ointment is considered unique, but there are other preparations with naphthalan:

  1. Naftalan oil – used for therapeutic massage.
  2. Naftaderm ointment - has identical indications for use. Its use is prohibited for the treatment of young children.

If you are intolerant to petroleum products, you can use analogues made on the basis of other components, but having an effect similar to naphthalan ointment:

  • Menovazan is an ointment with menthol, novocaine and benzocaine. This combined local remedy is prescribed for neuralgia, arthralgia and myalgia, as well as for dermatological pathologies that are accompanied by burning or itching.
  • Menovazine is an external solution, synonymous with the previous drug. Recommended for rubbing painful and itchy areas of the body.
  • Iricar is a homeopathic medicine based on tropical liana extract. Used for neurodermatitis, eczema, excessive dry skin.

Naftalan oil is a thick liquid of black-brown or brown color. It has a specific petroleum smell. Naftalan has high viscosity, acidic reaction, and high specific gravity.

The active principles of naphthalan are naphthenic hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons are the basis of many biologically active substances.

The naftalan deposit is the city of Naftalan, which is located in Azerbaijan. It is located 320 km from the capital - Baku and 50 km southeast of the ancient city of Ganja.

According to history, until 1873, naftalan was extracted from shallow wells that were dug by hand. In 1890, the first borehole was laid here by the German engineer E.I. Jaeger.

He hoped to make money from this oil, but it turned out that its products were not flammable. However, the engineer noticed that sick people were bathing in this oil. He learned about the medicinal properties of this product and decided to build a small enterprise to produce ointments. The business turned out to be very successful. The ointments sold well even abroad, helped by proper advertising.

Unique properties

Naftalan oil has unique healing properties, which have no analogues in the whole world. It has a variety of therapeutic effects on the human body. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, vasodilating and stimulating properties. Helps increase metabolism, accelerates the healing process of wounds. Naftalan stimulates the production of adrenal hormones and has antibacterial and sun protection effects. Leads to increased ventilation of the lungs. During treatment, patients experience an increase in hemoglobin and red blood cells in the blood. Naftalan promotes slower blood clotting.

Naftalan oil is toxic!

Naphthalan has a certain degree of toxicity, which is due to the presence of resins, naphthenic acids and aromatic hydrocarbons in its composition.

For this reason, during treatment it is necessary to take into account the area of application of naphthalan, the time of its exposure, the number of procedures, as well as the presence of liver pathology in the patient.

Naftalan should be applied to an area not exceeding 15-20% of human skin. The exposure time should not exceed 20-30 minutes. Usually no more than 12-15 procedures are prescribed, which are carried out every day.

With long-term use of naftalan, the following side effects may occur:, such as dry skin, folliculitis, the occurrence of hypersensitivity to this drug.
